Progress has been made in the “CI4C” carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project in the Mergelstetten cement plant in Germany. This is a € 120m joint venture project by Schwenk, Buzzi-Dyckerhoff, Heidelberg Materials and Vicat with an oxyfuel process for CO2 capture in Schwenk’s cement plant. A new rotary kiln with a 450 tpd clinker capacity for the thyssenkrupp Polysius pure oxyfuel calciner has been installed (photo credit: Armin Buhl). The CO2 purification unit will be delivered by Linde, the liquefied oxygen plant will be from Westfalen AG. The complete oxyfuel system is expected to be commissioned in the 1.Q 2025.

Kazakhstan’s cement production increased by Feb. 2024
In the first 2 months of 2024, Kazakhstan's cement production increased by +2.2%, YoY to 0.948 Mt after 0.928 Mt in the same period in 2023. While there has been an increase in January by +9.6% YoY, there has been a decline in February by -2.2% YoY.
Ukraine’s decline in cement exports by Feb. decreased
In the first 2 months of 2024, Ukraine's cement exports declined by -9.1%, YoY to 138.1 kt after 152 kt in the same period in 2023. While the decline in January has been -30.3% YoY, the decline in February decreased to -1.8% YoY. About 40% of the exports were by Poland, 30% by Romania and 20% by Hungary.
Cemex in Spain pushes two decarbonation projects
Cemex announced to seek EU funding for two of its decarbonation projects in Spain. In February 2023 Cemex signed an agreement with green fuels producer ETFuels, to transform CO2 from their Alicante cement plant (photo) into green fuels. It is planned that ETFuels will utilize up to 0.45 Mta of carbon emissions from Cemex, along with green hydrogen, to synthesize 0.3 Mta green methanol for use in the shipping industry. Cemex is evaluating technologies to perform CO2 capture for this project. A waste-to-hydrogen plant will be trialled at Cemex’s Alcanar cement in Tarragona. The demonstration plant is expected to process over 2,000 tons of waste, subsequently producing nearly 400 tons of green hydrogen.
US Furno’s cement kiln superlatives attract investors
The US startup Furno Materials, headquartered in Mountain View, California, has successfully closed a $6.5 m seed funding round. The key innovation is their highly efficient, vertical reactor which reduces the 4-steps of clinker production into a single and compact stage. The calcination and sintering zone, which is more similar to a lime shaft kiln, can be adjusted, thermal efficiency shall be 88%. The feed material composition is like in conventional clinker production, but fully engineered with additives and ground to probably larger particle sizes. The modular reactor, when similar to lime shaft kilns with capacities of 50 to 600 tpd, could be interesting for concrete companies producing their own clinker and cement. In Mexico the January 2024 white cement production of the integrated cement plants recovered by +33.2% to 0.085 Mt, after 0.064 Mt in Jan. last year and 0.083 Mt in Jan. 2022.

In Mexico the January 2024 grey cement production of the integrated cement plants increased by +3.3% to 3.544 Mt, after 3.432 Mt in Jan. last year and 3.230 Mt in Jan. 2022. This is the largest Jan. cement production within the last few years.
