Japan’s Sumitomo to use Fortera for decarbonization

Fortera Pilot Plant new

Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US-based Fortera for building a pilot low-carbon cement plant. The project will start with a feasibility study to implement Fortera’s innovative ReCarb® technology that captures the CO2 emitted during cement production and recarbonates it into calcium oxide (Photo: Fortera’s test facility). The aim is to build a plant at a Sumitoma Osaka Cement location by 2026 and to explore commercialization of the technology in Japan to achieve a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions. Sumitomo Osaka Cement is one of the major cement producers in Japan.
