After erection of the CO2 purification unit (CPU) at the Mergelstetten cement plant all CCUS systems have been installed and the commissioning and test phase will start in some months. This innovative CI4C ‘Catch4Climate’ benchmark project is a joint initiative by Heidelberg Materials, Buzzi, Schwenk and Vicat, but despite all celebrations, we should not forget, so far nothing has been achieved. In the CCUS pilot project, CO2 will be captured via a pure Oxyfuel system and rotary kiln with 450 tpd capacity. The costs for the CO2 facility incl. the CPU (photo) were given with €120 m. It will be interesting to know the CO2 avoidance costs after 1 year of operation and how the CO2 is utilized.
