The Breedon group, which supplies around 2 Mta cement from its UK and Irish operations, is happy which the speech by the new Prime Minister of the UK for ‘Buying British by Design’ (photo: Hope cement works in Derbyshire). Because the UK cement production is now at its lowest level since 1950, Breedon launched in January this year an action plan to secure the future of the domestic cement production. Domestic producers face uncompetitive industrial electricity costs and a carbon leakage by foreign clinker and cement importers, as long as CBAM is not in place. Breedon is following strong carbon regulations with its production, which now accounts for more than a third of UK’s cement sales.
