Heidelberg Materials paused GeZero project in Germany

Heidelberg Geseke

Heidelberg Materials has decided to pause its flagship GeZero project in Geseke, Germany, in its current form because despite all efforts, the implementation of the project cannot progress as planned. Current framework conditions are not yet sufficient to support a robust business case. In July 2023 Heidelberg Materials announced that the GeZero project will fully decarbonise the cement production at the company’s plant in North Rhine-Westphalia. The CCS project is supported by the EU Innovation Fund and aims to capture 700,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from 2029. The problem for Heidelberg Materials is a timely setup of the relevant downstream CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure solutions which are beyond an acceptable level of economic risk.
