Heidelberg Materials reached a milestone with the operation of the ANRAV.beta system at the Devnya cement plant in Bulgaria. In this demonstration project an Oxyfuel calciner is used, operating entirely on alternative fuels, using pure oxygen in the calcination process to capture CO₂ emissions with an Amine technology. The latest test campaigns demonstrated a successful operation with up to 100% alternative fuels and a highly concentrated CO₂ stream, ready for compression and purification. In 2022, the ANRAV project was selected for support by the EU Innovation Fund with a grant of close to €190m. The project shall be operational in 2028 and most of the captured CO2 shall be finally stored in depleted gas-fields in the Black Sea close to Varna (we reported here 18.10.2023).
