Cimpor plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In Portugal € 360m shall be invested in the Alhandra, Souselas and Loulé cement plants. A large investment is for the Alhandra plant in heat recovery systems and the replacement of equipment to increase energy efficiency. 84 GWh of renewable energy shall be produced for self-consumption. In the Souselas plant (photo) one 1400 tpd kiln shall be converted for the production of calcined clays. The conversion shall reduce up to 0.07 Mta CO2, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability. The clay calcination unit shall be operational this year.
Thanks a lot for the update for Portuguese cement industry decarbonisation plan. Do the Portuguese cement producers intend to use some CCU technologies in order to be more effective, or they would only convert the cement kiln for calcined clay production and integrate the WHR unit?
BR, Sincerely, Konstantin
Hi Konstantin,
Up to now, I have no information on CCS/CCUS projects in the cement industry in Portugal.
