For more than 40 years, England’s Spirit Energy has operated the South Morecambe and North Morecambe fields. The fields shall now be repurposed as Morecambe Net-Zero (MNZ) fields to provide a permanent decarbonisation solution at the Irish Sea off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness to provide a permanent, safe and secure carbon storage. Carbon dioxide will be transported to the site by pipeline, ship or rail, offering a long-term decarbonisation solution for emitting industries such as the cement industry. This state-of-the-art facility has the potential to be one of the UK’s largest carbon stores, capable of storing a gigaton of carbon dioxide – equivalent to three years’ worth of current UK carbon emissions.
