Heidelberg Materials’ flagship CCS project in Canada on hold

HM Edmonton1

A massive delay of Heidelberg Materials’ Edmonton CCS project in Canada was already obvious, because the 1.0 Mta carbon capture project was announced to be operational by the end of this year (we reported here 24.11.2023). Instead, in 2025 a FEED study has been completed and only the final EPC offers were negotiated for the project. Now, a spokesman of the company told the press that the CAD 1.36bn (US$ 0.99bn) project is on hold because of economical concerns. One problem is that in Canada carbon credits are traded at 45 per ton, which is too low to justify the project. A second problem is that the initial cost estimates for the project were too low, according to an internal 10-page report.
