Heidelberg Materials reached a milestone with their CCS-project at the US Mitchell cement plant in Indiana. The US Department of Energy, led by the Illinois State Geological Survey began test well drilling last month. The plant is located in the Illinois Basin which is well known for its carbon storage potential. This CarbonSafe project aims to confirm the suitability of the geology for the safe storing of 50 Mt CO2 from the Mitchell plant over 30 years. Three potential carbon storage formations and their caprocks or seals are being evaluated to safely trap and secure the CO2. Once testing is complete, the well will be plugged and abandoned in accordance with the State of Indiana drilling and operating permit.
