Holcim has commissioned a membrane-based CO2 capture demonstration CCUS system at its Höver cement plant close to Hanover in Germany. The technology has been developed by the Helmholtz Centre Hereon and commercialised by Cool Planet Technologies. The system (Photo Credit: Cool Planet) uses multilayer polymer membranes to separate CO2 from the plant’s flue gas and shall capture up to 10,000 tpa CO2. The demonstration programme is planned for 12 months. When the demonstration is successful, the technology is intended to capture around 90% of the plant’s 0.5 Mta CO2 emissions after 2030.
