Holcim installed a floating solar power plant in Belgium

TotalEnergies solaire flottant Obourg 2026

Holcim inaugurated at their Obourg cement plant in Belgium Europe’s largest floating solar power plant with a capacity of 31 MW. The power plant has been installed by TotalEnergies on a floating array on a rehabilitated chalk quarry lake (photo) to produce annually 30 GWh, which will be fully used as captive power for the cement plant. Worldwide, the installation of floating solar power plants on the surface of lakes and quarries has been increased to safe space, while the water provides a cooling effect for the solar panels and the arrays can improve the water quality.
