India’s fly ash utilization in cement largely increased

The generation of fly ash from power plants in India increased in 5 years from 226.1 Mta in FY19-20 to 334 Mta in FY24-25. In the same period, the utilization (including roads, cement, brick, backfilling, etc.) has been on the rise from 84.2% to 97.8%, mainly enabled by the MoEFCC, which has issued various notifications on fly ash utilization (photo: NTPC). Utilization by the cement industry increased from 57.9 Mta (25.6%) in FY19-20 to 89.8 Mta (27.0%) in FY24-25. Accordingly, the volumes significantly increased, while the utilization share moderately increased. However, the share of Pozzolana Portland Cement (PPC) in India’s cement industry increased from 65% in FY16-17 to 68.5% in FY24-25.
