The MECACLAY project by Schwenk Cement will receive a grant from the EU Innovation Fund for a first-of-its-kind industrial scale production plant at Akmenes cement (photo) in Lithuania. The new system is based on an all-electric clay activation process jointly developed by thyssenkrupp Polysius and Schwenk Cement without calcination and without fuels. The composite cement that is produced with the mechano-chemical clay activation process only emits around 350 kg CO2 / t cement. Compared to a conventional cement production, the CO2 footprint can be reduced by 42%, when the clinker content in the cement is reduced by about 50%.
