Material Evolution has launched an industrial scale, ultra-low carbon cement production plant in Llay in Wrexham in the UK. The Mevo A1 facility has an initial capacity of 0.12 Mta and produces a clinker-free cement, called MevoCem, which reduces CO2 emissions by up to 85%, compared to ordinary Portland cement. The technology uses 95% industrial waste materials and relies on the company’s patented alkali-fusion process to produce cement at ambient temperatures, eliminating the need for energy-intensive kilns and fossil fuels. First strategic investors are the construction materials group SigmaRoc and subsidiary CCP Building Products, who produce ‘greenbloc’ on the same site, the facility has been installed.
