Heidelberg Materials and Linde will open their Joint groundbreaking ‘Capture -to-Use’ or Cap2U-Project in Lengfurt in Germany soon. This is the first large-scale CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) project by the global cement industry. Annually, up to 0.070 Mta will be captured in the Lengfurt cement plant (photo) from the exhaust gas system by an amine scrubbing technology, purified, liquefied and transported to special tanks for intermediate storage, using Linde Engineering technology. The CO2 is of food-grade quality and can be reused in the food and beverage sector or for industrial use. The project costs by the two companies are substantial but have not been disclosed. € 15m have been funded by the German Federal Ministry BMWK. The first CO2 unloading is expected this year.
