Holcim halted flagship CCS project in Belgium

According to press news, Holcim has put the flagship Go4Zero CCS project at the Obourg cement plant in Belgium on hold. The project received a €230m EU fund for a total investment of about € 500m to install a new 1.7 Mta cement kiln with an Oxyfuel calciner and capturing the CO2 from the plant, with a start-up in 2029. The captured CO2 should be transported by pipeline to the Antwerp@C CO2 export hub, where it will be liquefied and transported by ship for storage beneath the North Sea (we reported here 9.12.2023). However, due to the press news, the risks in the downstream system are currently too high, to proceed with the project.
