In Japan a CCS-Initiative has been formed by the industry to cope with the ambitious CO2 goals of the Japanese Government. The project involves capturing CO2 at Nippon Steel’s Kyushu Works and Taiheiyo Group’s DC Co. cement plant (photo) and transporting the CO2 by ships to candidate storage sites. Beside the two mentioned companies 5 other companies including MHI and Itochu are cooperating in the project. In the upcoming phase of the project a front end engineering design (FEED) is included. The CCS project aims the decarbonization in particularly hard-to-abate industries, to achieve two targets set by the Japanese government: carbon neutrality in 2050 and a 46% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in FY 2030 (compared to FY 2013).
