LKAB Minerals UK is producing calcined clay as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) by milling recycled brick waste from Forterra’s Kings Dyke factory. The partnership between LKAB and the building products manufacturer Forterra, is pioneering the use of recycled calcined clay as a clinker substitute. The new production facility started in 2025 in Flixborough in North Lincolnshire with calcination via a modified rotary kiln. The calcined clay supports BS compliant cement combinations, can be used in both binary and ternary blend systems and recently received a certification according to BS 8615-1.
