In the first half of 2023 the cement production in Germany declined by -14.9%. While in the 1 H. 2022 about 14.919 Mt cement have been produced, in 1.H 2023 this figure declined to 12.769 Mt. If the decline continuous, this will have a substantial impact on the preliminary free EU ETS CO2 allocations.
GCC orders kiln line from thyssenkrupp for Odessa, TX
About a year ago Grupo Cementos Chihuahua (GCC) announced the expansion of the Odessa cement plant in Odessa TX, USA. The plant has been acquired in 2016 from CEMEX and is producing mainly oil-well cement. A new line with about 1.5 Mta capacity shall be installed. H&M Company is the general contractor, TK Polysius is the main supplier of the equipment. The kiln line shall be operational in 2025.
3.2% decline in Colombia’s cement production
In the first 7 month of the year 2023 thew cement production in Colombia declined by -3.2% to 8.106 Mt. The cement dispatch even declined by -5.3% to 7.349 Mt in the first 7 month of the year 2023.
Bestway Cement inaugurates 2 new lines in Pakistan
Over the years, Bestway Cement has grown substantially and has expanded its business operations at strategic locations across Pakistan. Its 5 operating plant sites are located in Hattar, Farooqia, Chakwal, Kallar Kahar and Mianwali (both Punjab province). The latest expansions of Line II in Hattar and the Line I in Mianwali give the company a 15.3% share on the cement capacity in Pakistan 2023.

In Germany in the last few years, the cement prices have massively increased, mainly due to the inflation and the increase of energy prices. However, the prices are now on a halt and because of the production over-capacities the prices are on a slight decline. While in Feb. 2023 the YoY price difference has been +41.2%, in June 2023 the YoY price difference declined to +33.8%.
NOx emissions abatement in the cement industry
According to the German Cement Association (VdZ) the global number of SCR plants (Selective Catalytic Reduction) increased in the last few years. However, in 2018 globally only 16 plants have been installed in the cement industry, while 10 SCR plants have been in the planning stage.
