Cockburn Cement Ltd. (CCL), which is part of ADBRI, started in 2022 the Kwinana upgrade project in Australia. The project targets the transitioning of the cement production from Munster to Kwinana, installing 2 new ball mills with 2 x 100 tph grinding capacity, while keeping the lime production in Munster. World’s largest CO2 mineralization plant to start in the USA
In the USA, in 3 weeks, start-up Fortera Corporation will open the world’s first commercial-scale CO2 mineralization plant at CalPortand’s Redding cement plant. The ReCarb® plant is inspired by nature and converts CO2 back into mineral form, to make carbon capture and utilization (CCU) realistic. Limestone as a feed material is dissolved in water and carbonated in an absorber with captured CO2 from the cement plant. After filtration and drying, the reactive calcium carbonate ReCarb® can be stored in silos for shipment. Such a process can be integrated in existing cement plant infrastructures and mineralize up to 70% of the CO2 process emissions.
Germany’s cement prices in Jan. increased moderately
In Germany, January mostly has highest month-on-month (MoM) cement price increases. This January it was moderate with +3.4% MoM from Dec. 2023. However, compared to Jan. 2023 the average cement prices increased by +15.3% YoY, after increases of +33.9% YoY in Jan. 2023.
Acc. to German VDZ a CO2 pipeline grid is required
The German VDZ (Cement Manufacturers Association) published a study on the future demand for CO2 pipelines from CCS-technologies. Such pipelines are necessary to transport captured CO2 to depleted wells in the North Sea or elsewhere. The study analysed the German requirements by the cement, lime and waste incineration industry. About 4800 km of pipelines are needed by 2035, transporting a growing demand of CO2 from 6.5 Mta in 2030 to 45.5 Mta by 2045, cumulated to 500 Mt. Eventually, up to 21 Mta is from a transit of CO2 from AT, CH and FR. Installation costs for the grid are estimated with € 14 bn, leading to 35 €/t CO2 for the period under review, excluding transit quantities.
