Sweden’s Cemvision announced a breakthrough that transforms underutilized, low-value Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) and Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOF) slags (chart: FEhS) into high-performance SCMs, while also recovering valuable metals. Cemvision’s patent-pending beneficiation process has successfully piloted with Swerim, one of the leading metallurgical research institutes, proving both technical feasibility and commercial potential. EAF slag typically contains high amounts of iron oxide (25-40%), of which 99% can be extracted and recovered in Cemvision’s slag valorisation process. The iron can be reintroduced into the steelmaking process. The end product can be used as a clinker replacement, possibly outperforming granulated blast furnace slag (GBGF).
