Decarbonation in Votorantim’s Toral plant in Spain

Votorantim Toral Spain 2

The Toral de los Vados cement plant of Votorantim in the Leon area in Spain is decarbonated. Instead of a huge and costly CCS- project the plant is undergoing different more conventional transformation processes. The decarbonation strategy includes a better process efficiency, the increased use of alternative fuels from waste recovery, producing more sustainable cements with a higher content of recycled additives and installing a photovoltaic park with the aim of replacing 15% of the plant’s energy needs. The reduction of the CO₂ emission factor has prevented the emission of more than 27,000 t of CO₂ annually, which is equivalent to the emissions produced by the circulation of 23,000 cars in one year.
