Cement Australia has temporarily paused operation of its Railton cement plant in Tasmania to upgrade its kiln firing system. The A$106 million investment is funded A$59.6 million by the Australian Government. The new firing system will allow the co-processing of large quantities of alternative fuels such as used tyres and wood chips from wood waste. The six-week site upgrade at the Railton kiln is underway, with the new fuels set to be fired by the third quarter of 2026. Up to now, the AFR (alternative fuel rate) is about 15%. This shall be increased to over 35%. While the investment costs are significant, the coal use shall be reduced by 111,000t/yr, which reduces CO₂ emissions by 107,000t/yr.
