Heidelberg Materials is hoping to produce America’s first carbon-free cement in the Edmonton plant (photo) in Canada. The CO2 in the exhaust gas of the plant will be captured in an absorption reactor to reduce CO2 emissions of 1.0 Mta by about 95%. A CO2 pilot capture system of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been tested at the plant since August 2023. For the full-scale installation at Edmonton, MHI’s proprietary advanced KM CDR ProcessTM with the KS-21TM solvent (jointly developed with The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.) will be used. At full operation, the captured CO2 will be transported via pipeline and permanently sequestered underground. Plant commissioning is planned for the end of 2026.

Malaysia’s cement production at new heights
Cement is booming in Malaysia! In the period from January to November 2023, the cement production increased by 16.3%, YoY to 20.689 Mt. In November the cement production alone increased by +28.6% to 2.442 Mt, after 1.899 Mt in November last year.
Kazakhstan’s cement production improved in 2023
In 2023, in Kazakhstan the cement production improved by 0.5% to 12.151 Mta. after 12.088 Mta in 2022 and 12.649 Mta in 2021. Due to a cement capacity expansion by 1.5 Mta this year, the cement capacity utilization declined to 70.6%.
Sinoma upgrades a kiln line in Saudi Arabia to 12,500 tpd
Yamama Cement awarded Sinoma Overseas a contract for a cement plant upgrade to 12,500 tpd in the Riyadh region, Saudi Arabia. The upgrade comes after a decision by the Management Board in April 2021, to relocate the existing cement kiln line No 7 with a capacity pf 10,000 tph from the company’s production site in the south of Riyadh to a new plant location in Northern Halal in the Al-Kharj Governorate of the Riyadh region. The contract for the relocation of the production line, supplied by thyssenkrupp Polysius, was awarded to Sinoma in November 2022 and is based on a directive by the Emirate of Riyadh. Commissioning of the plant relocation and upgrade is expected in 2nd half of 2025.
Ukraine’s cement im- and exports increased in 2023
In the Ukraine, the cement im- and exports in 2023 are not a reflection of the construction demand. While the imports increased 46% to 0.024 Mta, the exports increased by 122% to 1.311 Mta. This shows that during the war with Russia, much more cement still can be produced than what can be consumed.
Brazil’s Votorantim Cimentos invests in solar power
Votorantim Cimentos and Atlas Renewable Energy signed a power purchase agreement for the Luiz Carlos Solar Park, located in the municipality of Paracatu, Minas Gerais. The solar park will have an installed capacity of 787 MWp, of which almost two-thirds (470 MWp) will be destined for Votorantim Cimentos. 45% of Votorantims’s energy consumed globally for cement shall come from renewable sources by 2030. With this new project, 75% of the energy consumed by the company in Brazil will come from clean sources. The project will be started after the approval by Brazil’s national competition regulator CADE.

In 2023, Spain's cement im- and exported more diverged. While the exports declining by -4.9% YoY to 3.969 Mta, the imports increased by +5.4% to 0.628 Mta.
